Dragon Wars is a rare and legendary RPG that was originally meant to be released as Bard’s Tale IV, but due to licensing issues, it appeared under a different name. For decades, the game was only rumored to exist until July 2025, when it was recovered from Csory’s old disks with help from siz.
AKA Dragonwars. (Originally planned as “Bard’s Tale IV”, but the rights to that name weren’t available.) An incomplete but working version.
Set in a classic fantasy world where the player controls a party of adventurers through quests and battles. The atmosphere echoes the late ’80s RPG feel, with character progression, spellcasting, and dungeon exploration elements.
Gameplay Features
- Turn-based combat system requiring strategic thinking.
- Several character classes with evolving abilities.
- Enemy animations are partially functional due to hardware limitations and the absence of sprites on Plus/4.
Technical Details
- Requires a 1551 disk drive, spanning 5 disk sides.
- Runs on 64K memory; planned 256K support was never completed.
- Despite missing features, the game is fully playable and distributed as freeware.
