Digiloi (2018, Dr. TerrorZ)

A war-themed game for the Commodore 64 and Plus/4 platforms created entirely with PETSCII characters โ€” using only the built-in character set for graphics and animation.

A computer weapons ecosystem is about to take over the whole planet. You need to disable the master computer by finding three floppy keys and insert them in the terminal.

๐Ÿš€ Gameplay

  • The player must find three keys on an alien planet to activate a bomb.
  • Enemies include UFOs and robots trying to stop the player.
  • You only have one life, but energy can be restored.
  • Character movement happens in 8-pixel steps but still provides smooth gameplay.

๐ŸŽจ Graphics and Sound

  • Despite technical limits, the visuals are creative and detailed.
  • Sprites move by character cells, creating a striped (interlaced) effect.
  • Sound effects are simple, but the music is catchy and atmospheric.

Everything on the game is PETSCII graphics. If it was not for the colors, this would be like a Commodore PET game.

๐Ÿง  Technical Highlights

  • Sprite collision and layering are handled manually with machine code, as the VIC-II chip doesn’t assist in character mode.
  • Even with 8-pixel jumps, the game offers enjoyable playability.
